Step 1: The Pit Stop and Pre-Party
The very first thing when you head out is letting your dog do their business. Give them their time! Afterwards, if possible, take them to a safe area where they can let loose a bit and release that pent-up energy. A few minutes of play or socialising will make them much more receptive to training.
Step 2: Choose Your Side and Let the Magic Begin
Find a quiet spot. Decide whether you want your dog to walk on your right or your left. It'll be your "good side" for photos!
- The Magic Word: Use a short word and always the same one: «Heel» or «Here».
- Positive Association: Stand next to them (on the chosen side) with a loose lead. When they're calm, say «Heel» in a gentle voice and instantly give them a treat. Repeat this several times until you see their brain click into place.
Step 3: Time to Get Those Paws Moving!
- Start by taking a few steps. Every time they stay by your side, repeat your magic word in a cheerful tone («Good, heel!») and give them another treat.
- Now, hold a treat in your closed fist and use it as a magnet. Let them sniff it and guide them to walk by your side while you repeat the word. Every few metres, treat and celebrate!
- Gradually increase the distance between treats. The idea is for them to focus more on you and your cues than on everything else.
Practise this in short 10-minute sessions each day. No pressure! We want it to be a game, not an exam. And when you're done, always have some playtime to release tension!

- Change of Pace: Switch from slow to fast and back again. Don't let the walk get monotonous!

- Fewer Treats, More Cuddles: Gradually replace food rewards with strokes and words of encouragement. Your affection is the best reinforcement!
