How to Prevent Paw Burns on Your Dog During Hot Days

When the heat is on, tarmac, sand or even stones can go above 50°C. At those temperatures, your dog's pads can burn in a matter of seconds. Injuries like these are painful, limit their mobility and can take weeks to heal.

How to tell if the ground is too hot

A simple trick: place the palm of your hand on the surface for 5 seconds. If you find it uncomfortable to keep it there, it's too hot for your dog.

5 tips to protect their pads in summer:

  1. Walk at the cooler times of day. Ideally, head out before 10 in the morning or after 8 in the evening.

  2. Choose shady, grassy routes. Go for green spaces to avoid abrasive surfaces.

  3. Extra protection with creams or waxes. They help to moisturise and strengthen the skin of the pads.

  4. Take a roll-up blanket with you. The Dukier roll-up blanket is light, easy to carry and perfect for letting your dog rest on a cool surface at the beach, in parks or in rest areas.

  5. Constant hydration. Heat can cause dehydration, which also affects skin health. A foldable water bowl will help you keep your dog hydrated throughout the walk.

Symptoms of burnt pads:

  • Sudden limping

  • Persistently licking or biting their paws

  • Red, cracked or blistered pads

  • Changes in texture (rougher or softer)

If you spot any of these symptoms, take them to the vet and keep them off hot surfaces until they have recovered.

💡 Dukier tip: As well as protecting their paws, make sure your dog wears a comfortable, safe harness so they can enjoy the walk stress-free, even on the hottest days.
